Coir or Coconut Fibre is a natural fibre extracted from the outer husk of Coconut. It mainly consists of fibres, which have traditionally been used to manufacture rope, carpets, doormats, mattresses and brushes. Between these fibres is a corky granular substance called Coir Pith or COCO PEAT that has been found to have physico-chemical properties such as excellent aeration, drainage and water holding capacity making it a superior growing media for plants and a substitute for soil.
Coir pith or Cocopeat is accepted widely as a suitable soil substrate and has been consistently used in the cultivation of vegetables, fruits and flowers with outstanding results. Nurseries worldwide have used coir pith in propagation successfully, in addition Cocopeat has been used widely in landscaping, construction, waste composting and animal bedding.
